Welcome to the spectacular selection of printable mermaid coloring sheets. We compiled a huge list of free mermaid-related printables for your enjoyment. They are all kinds, for children and adults, for people who would like to learn about the anatomy, or folk who just try to spend time creatively with no explicit reason. You’ll find very detailed line presentations of merfolk (yes, mermen, too) and very vague outlines where you can add your personal vision of these fascinating mythological creatures to explore your imaginary world.
Let’s start with less demanding coloring pages of mermaids, suitable for kids.
We can find mermaids and mermen in mythologies all over the world with sources being thousands or just a few decades old. It’s completely normal to expect different presentations of these mysterious creatures, and our aim is exactly that – to offer free mermaid coloring sheets in as many styles as possible. Some will be simple, with strong contrasts and thick black lines, perfect for beginners to learn how to color inside the borders, others in hundreds of different shades of gray with challenging possibilities to enhance a seemingly simple printable into an artistic piece.
Indeed, we have a couple of coloring mermaid pictures in anime style, too!
Legends about mermaids have been with us for many centuries, but the most popular story is very likely Andersen’s Little Mermaid, which is mostly known through Disney’s adaptation. While Andersen portrayed her as a tragic figure, partly based on the legend about Undine, partly on his biography, seeing her as an outsider as he saw himself, Disney presented Little Mermaid as a rebellious teenager driven by hormones who eventually comes to the situation of saving the world.
And yes, she is cute all the way. Here are a few lovely pages of little mermaid waiting to be printed and colored.
Now we know that Andersen’s mermaid couldn’t find happiness with a human, but Disney’s did. How about other mermaids? Legends are full of encounters of humans and mermaids. Despite the fact they are living in different environments, different worlds really, they somehow find a way to fall in love with each other, which leads to unpredictable, possibly tragic consequences.
Did you know that a human can captivate a mermaid by stealing her comb or mirror? If he hides it well, she will stay with him forever. Vanity is one of the trademarks of a typical mermaid.
Mermaid seeings were reported by sailors who very likely spotted different water creatures whose bodies looked similar to humans from a distance and in bad visual, e.g. foggy, conditions. Poor vision near the shore goes well with reports about wreckages caused by mermaids who supposedly lured ships to shoals where they sunk together with their cargo. Sailors, of course, became prisoners of mermaids…
Christopher Colombo reported about mermaid seeings on his first voyage to America (he believed he got to India). He was not alone. All of the crew saw them. Today, it is believed they spotted manatees.
A well-known German legend from the beginning of the 19th century tells a story of Lorelei. She was a beautiful girl with an unfaithful lover. She committed suicide by jumping into the Rhine River. From then on she lures fishermen to join her in the depths of the deadly waters.
There is actually a rock called Lorelei at Sankt Goarshausen, which makes an echo, that may be mistakenly misunderstood as her call. This is the exact rock from which she supposedly jumped.
While we mostly talk about mermaids, there are also their male counterparts mermen, which means the term merfolk or merpeople would be more correct. But it seems the focus was always on mermaids due to several reasons, with their ability to lure with their look, their songs, their provocativeness, always being among the top ones.
Nevertheless, we prepared a few coloring pages with mermen so you can explore and enjoy their magical world, too.
Did you know there is an unofficial holiday called International Mermaid Day, celebrated in different parts of the world by thousands of mermaid fans every 29th of March? This holiday combines education and fun, using the opportunity to gather large groups of people interested in these mythological creatures, present in most of the old cultures in the world, while meeting new people, joining interesting conversations, and throwing themed parties, preferably on the beach or at least with a lot of water in the neighborhood.
Another idea to celebrate the International Mermaid Day is to color a few coloring pages with mermaids. You can find a lot of them right here, and we also prepared a selection of mermaid-themed decorative borders, frames, and vignettes to add a bit of mystery and magic to all kinds of personal projects. Your imagination is the only limit!
Don’t forget you can celebrate Mermaid Day every day. Mermaid-themed parties are very popular for birthdays, bridal showers, fish picnics, and even retirement parties. The main theme gives you a few basic directions (decoration, colors, music, food), but it’s your creativity that will give real spark.
In other words: the theme will set the initial feel, but you’ll give the soul to the party. Here are a few mermaid-themed coloring pages for starters.
Have fun, and share this post with your friends!
